The world is filled with sayings, rules of
thumbs, and wise words of wisdom. In the
digital age, we are flooded with these sayings,
messages, and reccomendations of
self-inquiry -- coming to us via social media
from a quirky distant relative, or from one of our hidden spirituality boards on pinterest. Of the most popular are sayings about the
ego. And, problematically, the ego is almost
always portrayed as a negative component to
the self. In specific, the saying "kill your ego" is of the most popular.
While pondering my doubts of this so-called internet wisdom,
I decided to ask some friends what they
thought about the saying. I paired it with
its new spin, as “Kill Your Ego” would now
be read as “Cure Your Ego”. The consensus? We all need a healthy ego in order to positively contribute
to the world. We musn’t succomb to egotism, but instead
must value self-confidence and constant personal growth.
